Alloy Rim Glossary

The terms that decide whether a rim actually fits your car — PCD, offset, centre bore and the rest — explained in plain language. If you only read one entry, read PCD (bolt pattern); it is the measurement that most often makes a rim impossible to fit.

Fitment

PCD (bolt pattern)

PCD, or Pitch Circle Diameter, is the bolt pattern of an alloy rim: the number of bolt holes and the diameter of the imaginary circle they sit on, written as 4x100 or 5x114.3. The first number is how many bolts, the second is that circle in millimetres. A rim only fits a car whose hub has the same PCD — a 4x100 rim will not fit a 5x114.3 car, and no adapter is a safe substitute on a road car.

Offset (ET)

Offset, marked ET on an alloy rim, is the distance in millimetres between the rim’s mounting face and its centre line. Positive offset pulls the wheel inward toward the suspension; negative offset pushes it outward past the arch. Two rims of identical size and PCD can still sit completely differently on the same car because their offsets differ, so offset is checked alongside size and PCD, never instead of them.

Centre bore

The centre bore is the machined hole in the middle of an alloy rim that seats onto the car’s hub. It must be equal to or larger than the hub diameter. When it is larger, a hub ring fills the gap so the wheel is carried by the hub rather than by the bolts; when it is smaller, the rim will not mount at all.

Hub-centric vs lug-centric

A hub-centric alloy rim is centred by the car’s hub through the centre bore, which carries the vehicle’s weight. A lug-centric rim is centred by the bolts alone. Hub-centric mounting is preferred because it removes vibration at speed and stops the bolts carrying shear load; a hub ring converts an oversized centre bore back to hub-centric.

Hub ring (spigot ring)

A hub ring, also called a spigot ring, is a plastic or alloy collar that fills the gap between an alloy rim’s centre bore and a smaller vehicle hub. It makes an otherwise loose-fitting rim hub-centric, which is what removes steering-wheel vibration at motorway speed. Hub rings are cheap and are matched to one specific bore-to-hub combination.

Rim width (J / JJ)

Rim width is the distance between an alloy rim’s bead seats in inches, written as 6J or 7JJ. The letter denotes the flange profile, not the width. Width determines which tyre sizes can be safely fitted: too narrow and the tyre balloons, too wide and the sidewall is stretched, so width is quoted with size whenever a rim is sold.

Rim size (diameter)

Rim size is the diameter of an alloy rim in inches, measured at the bead seat where the tyre sits — not the outer lip. Common sizes in Pakistan are 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19 inch. Going up a size usually requires a lower-profile tyre to keep the overall rolling diameter close to standard, which is called plus sizing.

Plus sizing

Plus sizing means fitting a larger-diameter alloy rim while reducing the tyre sidewall so the overall wheel-and-tyre diameter stays close to the car’s original. It keeps the speedometer accurate and preserves clearance. Going up in rim size without reducing the tyre profile raises the rolling diameter, which reads speed incorrectly and can foul the arch.

Staggered fitment

A staggered fitment uses wider alloy rims on the rear axle than the front, and is common on rear-wheel-drive cars. Staggered sets cannot be rotated front to back, and both axles must still match the car’s PCD. A staggered set is sold as a set of four with two different widths, so the front and rear rims are not interchangeable.

Lug nut seat

The lug nut seat is the shape of the bolt hole taper on an alloy rim — conical, ball (radius) or flat. The nut must match that shape or the wheel is held on a few points of metal instead of a full seated face, which lets it work loose. Changing from steel to alloy rims often means changing nuts, because factory steel-wheel nuts frequently use a different seat.

Wheel design

Concave

A concave alloy rim has spokes that curve inward from the outer lip toward the hub, creating a dished, three-dimensional face. The effect is stronger on wider rims and lower offsets, because both increase the distance between the mounting face and the lip. Concave profiles are one of the most sought-after looks in the JDM and euro-tuner scene.

Deep dish

A deep dish alloy rim has a pronounced outer barrel between the spoke face and the lip, so the rim appears to be set deep behind a wide band of bare metal. Dish is produced by a low or negative offset combined with rim width. It is a styling characteristic rather than a performance one.

Cast, flow-formed and forged

Cast, flow-formed and forged describe how an alloy rim is manufactured. Cast rims are poured into a mould and are the most affordable. Flow-formed rims are cast then spun and stretched at the barrel, giving a lighter, stronger rim for moderate cost. Forged rims are pressed from a solid billet and are the lightest and strongest, at the highest price.

JDM wheels

JDM stands for Japanese Domestic Market and, applied to alloy rims, refers to wheels made by Japanese manufacturers such as Rays, Work, Weds, Advan and Enkei for sale in Japan. JDM rims are prized for lightweight motorsport construction and for designs — the Rays TE37 among them — that are widely recognised in the tuner community.

Hyper silver, gunmetal and bronze

Hyper silver, gunmetal and bronze are common alloy rim finishes. Hyper silver is a bright metallic silver with a darker tint; gunmetal is a dark grey approaching charcoal; bronze is a warm gold-brown associated with Japanese motorsport wheels. Finish is cosmetic and can be changed during refurbishing by stripping and powder coating the rim in another colour.

Condition & refurbishing

Refurbished alloy rim

A refurbished alloy rim is a used wheel that has been professionally restored: stripped, straightened if bent, inspected for cracks, repaired for kerb damage, then powder coated and balanced. A properly refurbished rim costs substantially less than new while matching the finish of a new wheel. Refurbishing corrects cosmetic and minor structural damage; it does not rescue a cracked or heavily buckled rim.

Kerb damage

Kerb damage, also called kerb rash, is the scraping on an alloy rim’s outer lip caused by contact with a kerb while parking. It is cosmetic in most cases and is removed during refurbishing by filling and re-machining the lip before recoating. Deep gouges that reach into the structure of the lip are treated differently, because material loss there affects the tyre bead seal.

Buckle (bend)

A buckle is a bend in an alloy rim’s barrel or lip, usually caused by hitting a pothole. It shows up as vibration through the steering and as slow air loss where the bend breaks the tyre bead seal. Minor buckles can be straightened hydraulically during refurbishing; a rim that is bent across a spoke or cracked is scrapped rather than repaired.

Powder coating

Powder coating is a finishing process in which dry pigment is applied electrostatically to a stripped alloy rim and then oven-cured into a hard, even shell. It is more durable than wet paint and resists chipping from road debris, which is why it is the standard finish for refurbished alloy rims and why a refurbished rim can look and wear like a new one.

Wheel balancing

Wheel balancing is the fitting of small counterweights to a mounted wheel so its mass is distributed evenly around the axle. An unbalanced wheel vibrates at speed and wears the tyre and suspension unevenly. Every alloy rim must be balanced after a tyre is fitted, including a refurbished one, because refurbishing changes the weight distribution slightly.

Condition grade (A, B, C)

A condition grade is a simple rating of a used alloy rim’s cosmetic state. At Allah Tawakal Alloy Rims, Grade A is near-flawless, Grade B carries light marks visible on close inspection, and Grade C shows honest wear at a lower price. Grades describe appearance only — every rim sold is structurally inspected regardless of grade.

Buying

Set of four vs single

Alloy rims are normally bought as a set of four so that all wheels match in size, offset and finish. A single rim is bought to replace one that has been damaged beyond repair, and it must match the existing three exactly in size, PCD, offset and width. Matching a single rim to an older set is harder than buying a set, because finishes fade and designs go out of production.

Fitment check

A fitment check confirms that a specific alloy rim will physically and safely fit a specific car before purchase. It compares the rim’s PCD, centre bore, diameter, width and offset against the vehicle’s requirements. Giving the car’s model and year is enough to run the check, which is why sellers ask for it before quoting.
